Thought for the Day: Today's Trivia Question is related to physical health, however, the answer has a huge impact on the mental health of our nation's citizens. Here's the question:
In 20 years, what percent of Americans will be overweight or obese? What do you think the answer is? Take a guess and read on to see.
a) 35.7%
b) 50.5%
c) 63.1%
d) 75.6%
e) Over 95%
According to a new documentary film, "Fed Up" narrated and executive produced by Katie Couric, the answer is e) Over 95%. I took a look at the current rate which is 63.1% which seems way too high already. The film, opening May 9th, points the finger at the food industry's greed and misrepresentation of the facts. In the film, Couric, along with with Oscar winning producer and author, Laurie David (An Inconvenient Truth) and director, Stephanie Soechtig aim to inform people of the misleading representation of foods as "healthy." Although the public is being told foods are healthy, they contain high levels of processed sugars which lead to addictions to sugar. The more people eat these sweets, the more they crave them, which makes them fatter and fatter. The film reports that this problem is of epidemic proportions, but could be preventable.
The health concerns related to obesity are clearly documented. The risks associated with obesity of diabetes, heart conditions, and high blood pressure are plaguing our society. According to "Fed Up" by 2050, 1 in 3 adults will suffer from diabetes. In addition, weight problems are correlated to increased incidence of depression and low self esteem. The food industry has already is fighting back and saying that the film is exaggerating and not recognizing their advances over the years; however, I plan to see the film and make up my own mind about the issue. I heard Katie Couric speak about the film on CNN and think she has some very powerful important information to share with the public.
