Sunday Comic Strips: Ikea Cat & Gorilla's View of Humanity

Thought for the Day: Sundays are simply reserved for comics today I'm sharing two related to animals. I simply loved the look on the cat's eyes in this clever photo combined with the universal knowledge of the frustration most people have had with the scanty Ikea assembly instructions. There's another cute cartoon with animals questioning why their fate is different from that of humans...

Sunday's Comic Strips: Parenting Demands Creative Solutions

Photo from HistoricalLOLs.com
Thought for the Day: Today's Comic Strips focus on the importance of creative parenting solutions. Don't try either of these solutions at home, unless you are a photoshop or videography whizz, however, as a psychologist, I believe keeping a sense of humor while parenting should be a prerequisite for Parenting 101.
Above is a photo that reminds me of an experience I had many years ago while living in Israel. American friend's were visiting and asked that we watch their two young daughters. As a new immigrant, I was fortunate to have a been able to purchase a washing machine without 300% taxation on the appliance (at the time not many people owned machines) in my 5th floor walk up apartment, but did not have the luxury of owning a clothes dryer. I was on the back porch when:
Sarit: "What are you doing?"
Me: "Hanging clothes."
Sarit: "Why are you doing that?

Sunday's Comic Strips: A Cat's Review of To Kill a Mockingbird & a 4 Year Old's Hysterical 911 Call

Thought for the Day: Here are two funny posts that I found in my facebook feed last week. The video is really quite humorous. It's a 911 call from a 4 year old. The operator handled it really well. Have a great Sunday.

Sunday's Comic Strips:The Antithesis of a Superhero: Anxiety Girl

This week's WakeUpAndDreamCatalyst.blogspot.com Sunday Comic Strips Choice
Thought for the Day: Often comics about emotional disorders are not very funny. Instead they are thought provoking. Since humor helps us overcome emotional problems, I try to share some of the psychological comics that I find as I surf the internet. Today's comic from Natilie Dee makes both a thought provoking and a funny statement. If you tend to be overly self conscious and anxious like Anxiety Girl, remembering this superhero may help you fight the anxiety. Remember, you may be the only one who notices that your tights are too tight or whatever you think may not be seen as "perfect" or acceptable to others. Most people are not focusing on you. Try not to jump to the worst conclusion! Have a great weekend!

I've decided to add a bit of humor to the #FF Fabulous Finds each week. Here's one for all parents

Thought for the Day: Here are my #FF Fabulous Finds for this week. They vary from one of the most inspiring acceptance speeches at the Oscars, to new forms of treatment for mental illness which may soon replace the reliance on medication, to a wonderful new invention which can help prevent date rape, new research on music, and a new site that helps parents learn about ways to protect their children online. Have a great weekend!

Sunday's Comic Strips: Tigger's Seasonal Affective Disorder

Thought for the Day: As I brace myself for what I hope will be the last snow storm of the season, I found this cartoon on PsycheCentral.com/humor. It seems that even Tigger loses his bounce during the winter and may need some medication for Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Have a great Sunday and enjoy the Oscars tonight!

Sunday's Comic Strips: Parenting Twins

Thought for the Day: It is Sunday & time for a funny post. As I said on #FF Friday's Fabulous Finds, I'm sharing some of the posts that I find while surfing the web. Today's came from Parent Society on Facebook.  All parents can appreciate this funny photo, but it highlights the importance that in order to raise twins, parents definitely need a sense of humor! Have a great weekend! Here's how it appeared on Facebook:

Breaking News: Santa Admits He Is Visually Impaired: Becomes Spokesperson For The Blind Judo Foundation

Santa Admits He Is Visually Impaired, Becomes Spokesperson For The Blind Judo Foundation

An emotional Santa admitted his vision has been failing for years. With Rudolph at his side, Santa became the spokesperson for the Blind Judo Foundation.

North Pole & Weston CT – WEBWIRE – Thursday, December 12, 2013

I had changed from a Ho Ho kind of guy, to feeling Ho Hum about life, embarrassed and depressed about my declining vision.
The Blind Judo Foundation caught up with Santa at a surprise press conference at the North Pole. Santa revealed he can no longer hide his serious visual impairment. The true reason for hiring Rudolph was not bad weather, he needed a seeing-eye reindeer for many years. Mrs. Claus encouraged Santa to get help, tell the truth and become a positive role model for blind & visually impaired children, young adults & wounded warriors. In an apology to his fans, he revealed that in therapy with Dr. Barbara Lavi, author and Clinical Psychologist, he learned to cope with his vision loss and about  the Blind Judo Foundation.
Santa began training in the sport of Judo. He reports that, “ Judo helped me regain not only my strength and balance but also my self confidence.” Mrs. Santa is pleased with her husband’s progress. Santa said, ”Dr. Lavi’s book,   The Wake Up And Dream Challenge helped me realize I wanted to do more with my life.”

Therefore, “Rudolph will be delivering the gifts this year, while I train for Judo tournaments. I hope to make the US Paralympic Judo Team.” He also says he is excited to train with the former US Olympic and US Paralympic Judo Coach and iconic legend, Coach Willy Cahill, at Cahill’s Judo Academy.
Santa announced and encouraged everyone to secure a copy of Dr. Lavi’s Kindle book, The Wake Up And Dream Challenge which will be on sale at Amazon with 1/2 of the profits from every book sold donated to the Blind Judo Foundation from 12/12 - 12/19. (http://www.amazon.com/Dream-Challenge-Benefiting-Blind-Foundation-ebook/dp/B008R1FFBI)
The Blind Judo Foundation is a nonprofit 501(c) (3) organization whose mission is to empower the blind and visually impaired using the tools and tenets of Judo. These include but not limited to confidence building, character development, how-to make commitments and follow through, humility, respect and responsibility. All members of the Foundation are volunteers. Funding of blind and visually impaired athletes to train, travel locally, nationally and internationally are through tax exempt donations, the financial life-line. Sunday's Comics Strips: Clever No Parking Sign

Thought for the Day: On Sundays, I try to take it easy & bring back a bit of the joy I had growing up reading the Sunday comics. I have not searched for funny photos for a while & did so this morning. Here's my pick for today. It's always refreshing when a business finds a creative way to advertise their business. If you have come across any clever signs, I'd love to see them & would be happy to post them in this Sunday Comics series. Have a great end of the weekend!

Sunday's Comic Strips: Useful Dog Tricks

Thought for the Day: I never owned a dog. When I was very young, my father took care of two Weimaraners for a few weeks. I was shorter than they were & when they tried to play with me I would be knocked down & frightened. My mother & brother were allergic to dogs & therefore, I never owned one. For all the dog lovers out there, here's a very funny video of some very useful dog tricks by Jesse. Hope you enjoy it & have a great end of the weekend!

Special Edition: Wake Up Washington: Part II Putting Congress On the Couch

Thought for the Day: I tend to be a serious person, however, when a humorous creative writing idea comes my way, I try not to let it pass. Therefore, today, I am writing a special edition for the blog. I hope you enjoy it & feel free to share it with whomever will appreciate the humor. Maybe it will help Wake Up Congress. As always, I'd love to hear your comments & ideas.

On Wednesday, I posted some comments on the need to "Wake Up" Washington DC & asked you for some therapeutic suggestions. Today, I'm offering a few treatment plans (tongue in cheek) to consider for Congress:

1) Psychoanalytic Treatment Plan: Put Congress on the couch. Address early childhood issues, Oedipal conflicts & wishes to get rid of paternal figures & have presidential power. Pros: it could get to the bottom of the causes for the neurotic behaviors. Cons: It would takes years of intensive psychotherapy & the nation would be in shambles before the treatment was completed.

2) Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: Develop a plan to overcome ObamaCare Phobia using progressive desensitization techniques. Teach members of Congress relaxation techniques & combine them with imagining a hierarchy of their fears of ObamaCare from the least to the most anxiety provoking.  Have them stay relaxed while imagining all the scenarios & they will be ready to move on. Pros: It could be completed in a few sessions. Cons: It might not get to the underlying issues causing the phobias.

3) Marriage Counseling &/or Family Therapy: Meet with members of congress to see if the marital rifts between the two sides can be resolved. Focus on enhancing communication skills & learning to compromise. Try to help the "parental figures" (congressmen & women) consider the needs of their children (citizens) even if they cannot resolve their differences. Mandate participation in a parenting class for divorcing parents for all members of congress. Get them into mediation to find solutions on how to keep the government running despite their differences. Pros: It could make them wake up & start behaving in a more adult ways. Cons: To do marriage counseling or mediation they must 1st be able to sit in the same room & start speaking to one another. It may not be possible at this time.

4) Addiction Intervention & Rehabilitation: Since Congress seems to be in denial of their addiction to "obstruction of the democratic process," an intervention may be necessary. All family members (citizens) who feel Congress' addiction is self destructive would meet with the interventionist prior to meeting with the addict. Family members would need to be prepared to tell Congress how their addiction is impacting them & the nation & the consequences if they do not get intensive treatment immediately. Before involving Congress a treatment facility & plan for rehab would be chosen. Pros: It may be the only way to break through Congress' denial of their addiction. Cons: The inpatient stay would bankrupt ObamaCare & recovery would take too long.

5) Treatment of Cult Victims: Treat members of Congress for brainwashing by cult like factions. Pros: It might actually help break the impasses in DC. Cons: Treatments for cult victims are controversial techniques. They cannot be carried out without cooperation of the brainwashed victims. Members of Congress would never cooperate.

I know there are therapists following this blog. Anyone have some additional suggestions?

Saturday's Songs for the Soul: Mr Rogers Remixed With A Healthy Dose of Laughter

*Photo from FlickrCC.com
Thought for Today: I tend to be serious, but this video was just too funny not to share. In a previous post  (Smile It's Free Therapy) I described the benefits of smiling & laughter. Psychologists have found that laughter & a sense of humor lengthen our lives, so here's a dose of laughter for your weekend. I never knew Mr. Rogers could break dance or liked rap music, but pbsdigitalstudios
(Remixed by Symphony of Science's John D. Boswell (@MusicalScience) for PBS DS) got him to move in this hysterical remix. I hope you like it & that it brings a smile or two. Share it with a friend & help them live longer, too!

Sunday's Comic Strips: Teachers Giving A Sign! What's Real Education?

Thought for the Day: It's time for Sunday's Comic Strips. Today I bring a funny sign that I found on Pinterest posted by Janice Malone. Teachers at the Roosevelt Middle School made a bold statement protesting the time spent on State assessment testing. Those of you following my blog know I wish there was more emphasis on children's emotional well being & teaching them to be respectful of one another. I applaud Roosevelt Middle School's teachers & administrations public protest.

Parents should take a stand, if they want things to change. What do you think is "real" education? Do you think schools are spending too much time on standardized tests? What would you like to see added to schools programs?
